If I were Dean I would probably take my supporters and my enthusiasm to the Green Party in retaliation.

That would actually make a difference. I have little preference as to which party he could or should take his support. However, a large move to any small party would have a substantial impact on elections and party politics. Two party systems aren't favorable in my mind and results in too much entrenchment. Having their own party would also give the whackos a more realistic idea of their numbers and probably reduce the crazed extremist rhetoric.
