They assimilated much of that Eastern knowledge, and made the West aware of it in due course. Quite a lot of the impulse toward learning amongst the earliest muslim Arabs came about due to residual influences of pre-Islamic Arabic culture. I do believe Islam was and yet remains a stultifying force and not one of liberation. Were it not for oil, there would not be a single islamic country on earth worth a cup of spit. <rant>So referring backward to the virtues of pre-Islamic and near pre-Islamic Arabs simply will not get anyone very far in my most humble opinion. What I demand of myself and of anyone who wishes to cultivate my respect is that they produce something of note right now, not yesterday, but right now. I am always humored and yet vicariously embarrassed when white racists, usually highly unintelligent people individually, refer to the greatness of Greeks (conveniently excluding the supreme influences of the Egyptians upon that people) as an indicator of white superiority when at one time the Greeks and the Swedes would have considered themselves an entirely different sort of people. It is madness. All people have something awesome up their sleeves in history, in the present and likely in the future, if the God of Israel tarries and does not clean out the tank anytime soon. I just got back from a short trip to Russia. If anyone wishes to completely obliterate the notion of white or Asian superiority, visit Russia and surrounding environs. Don't get me wrong. The Russians are a fine people - Eastern Europeans additionally. But essentially they are every bit as stupid and capable of savagery as the camel-jockeys of Islam and the grub eaters of sub-Saharan Africa. Every dang body is pathetic, including the white inbreds of Arkansas and the comprehensively filthy Europeans (who have generally made dressing up their lives of dung an artform). I am at once equally enthralled and repulsed by all groups. If any modern group of people has reason to attempt to rest on the laurels of its genetic antecedents (which is very ridiculous to begin with), it is the Asian. This people group was into some amazing stuff quite long before anyone else. Asians are a testament to the destructiveness of isolationism. I think it is impossible to consistently take men as individuals as long as they group themselves into cultures. But we can and should consistently judge cultures as individuals. Some cultures are just better than others - unlike people. We should be willing to admit that. Islamic culture, amongst many others, is on the whole inferior to the western cultures. While it undoubtedly has something to teach us, it is a cultural child in this world and ought to heed its betters.</rant>
