Andrew: Good comments, which largely express my view,
except that my gold stocks are always almost entirely microcaps, with Chesapeake being my version of a mid-cap. I've been reaping profits since August, but until December I kept yielding to the temptation to put them back into new stocks or add on pullbacks or good news.

This past week I've resumed adding, but right now I'm mostly going with stink bids (they stink as offers if you assume trendlines and/or 50 MAs hold, but they will later smell like perfume to any sellers if shares head down to 200 MAs).

I would use trend line breaks as stop loss points here too in a non-taxable account, less so in a taxable one. I'm keeping a fair cash level here despite my LT bullish view because bids will vanish fast if shares appear to be headed to the 200 MAs (daily, or worse, weekly). Rather than stopping out on positions I want LT, I prefer to leg into positions on the way down.

Re: Goldcorp--I have the same chart view, but why do you think it was savaged by short sellers following betrayal by management? Are you referring to McEwan selling shares and/or gold near the interim top? What a great move; I agreed with it when I read about it and now events endorse it. That sort of savvy (by Lassonde too) increases my respect for management and would make me more likely to buy Goldcorp if I want a major. Nothing wrong with market timing if someone has a track record of doing it right. I realize you're not criticizing it, just noting that the shorts may have perceived the selling would have a market (herd) effect you can trade off.

Andrew:

One thing we can learn from your charts is that the SA Golds are the strongest. When this correction is over they may be the best place to put money.
