Right -- it's not what people think. The deficit in advanced technology is likely where Boeing's drop in business shows up. What's so amazing is that this development doesn't seem to be accompanied by a national sense of urgency. The trade deficits don't get solved by increasing consumption, and people's willingness to borrow and buy if anything makes things worse. The logical conclusion is surely that the standard of living in the US will drop. As happiness doesn't correlate well with wealth, maybe this has a silver lining?
