Yes but if 9/11 had happened a couple of years before the Clinton/Dole election, Dole would have beaten him like a rug (I voted for him in that election, I think he was a great public servant). At the time of that election, the Cold War had been handily won, communism was dead, and nobody expected anything but peace and prosperity in the future. Contrast to today, where national defense is THE issue, even moreso than during most of the Cold War (at least the 1970's part of it).
