The claims of Jesus to be the "I AM", the one and only way to God, and the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, are all validated by what He himself said He would do; that is, rise from the dead.

Well Paulist Christianity certainly strays from the very early Christianity doesn't it?

I think Paul for a variety of reasons lent to his preaching to the pagan and later in his efforts to convert the Jew , did somewhat outdo and enlarge the field of Godhead , of which our original Rabbai Jesus makes none these claims in fact , though the charm of that eternal idealism of that kind of absolute purity of purpose appeals to the divine in us all . The one we know as Jesus made less of the lofty claim to Godhead , than more practically placing himself in the midst of the turmoil, hatred , fear ignorance & hostilities surrounding him , and defused and taught another way whenever he could , following the dictates of his heart (and the Father he envisioned ) and achieving victory over these at the final end in the Crucifixion. It is a sad , fatalistic , but hugely uplifting story which ends with Jesus conquering all these within himself . He doesn't choose to hate in the end , but to forgive even though they crucify him.
He and the Father are one.

Saul was spending much time in Tarsus , with huge masses of bewildered & homeless persons displaced by the roman wars ...with the base religion being Mithraism. Paul's method certainly was influenced to a great degree by those beliefs and rites present , many of which you find in Christianity today. The sacred Blood of the sacred Bull of Mithraism , Paul substitutes the sacred blood of the Christ , and instead of Mithra being the messiah/intercessor for mankind , Paul tells the pagan it is now to be Jesus and it is his blood and sacrifice that cleanses away sin .

Certainly the centuries of animal slaughter , and the rivers of blood that ran down the hidden gutters of the Temples from Tarsus to Jerusalem , certainly were not bringing the desired effect of pleasing the Diety and bringing anyone peace , or of of saving mankind from chaos. Tarsus the city Saul escapes to , is already 2000 yrs old when he arrives there, and had it's own Mithra savior/messiah/intercessor story .

As well as the endless war , sickness , displacement , and utter hoplessness ...you have proportionately huge populations of men & tribes and cities , all in competition with each other , with Rome levering over all. Some 5mil alone just in and around Israel . It must have been quite chaotic and seeming like the end of the world .
