With the huge bomb at the edge of the Green Zone and this one in Karbala, I doubt Annan will be anxious to get the UN deeply involved in the Iraqi election/selection process.

Bomb attack in Iraq injures 13

Thirteen people were injured, one seriously, in a bomb blast in the holy Shiite city of Karbala in central Iraq, hospital sources said.

The bomb was hidden in a package left on the street in the centre of the city near the shrine of Abbas, a revered Shiite Imam, witnesses said on Sunday.

The attack was the latest on Iraq's Shiite majority since the US-led war on Iraq ousted Saddam Hussein in April and came the same day a suicide truck bombing on the US headquarters in Baghdad that killed at least 25.

Local health department director Salah Hasnawi said that 13 people were admitted to Karbala hospital, one of whom was seriously hurt.
