Al, tax cuts have little to do with whether Social Security SHOULD be privatized, or at least fixed. Instead, tax cuts have more to do with HOW Social Security can be fixed, i.e. the costs of doing so. Neither side wants to own up to the costs of fixing Social Security, but at least one side is highlighting the costs of NOT fixing Social Security by proposing a solution.

This issue was one of the main reasons I personally believed in Bush over Gore in 2000. Bush proposed the solution, while Gore denounced the solution because Social Security is indeed a Ponzi scheme. (Of course, Gore didn't say "Ponzi Scheme," but he did say what people are paying now are directly going toward current beneficiaries. I'll never forget it.)
