It's possible.

Top bracket in Calif this year yields 41%. (35% Fed + 9%State - 35*9StateDed = 41% )

(Before Fed cuts last year this was 45%. Including other take outs health care fsa etc., netpay could be 49% - a psychological point where a person puts more in than gets out.)
