Internet pioneer ponders: What's next? Vinton Cerf wears three hats these days, but he may be best known as one of the "fathers of the Internet." Cerf, 60, co-designed the TCP/IP protocol and the architecture of the Internet during his tenure at the U.S. Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) about 30 years ago. Today, he is senior vice president of technology strategy at MCI, the company that has emerged out of the bankruptcy (and scandals) of WorldCom; board chairman of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), which manages and coordinates the domain-name system; and a distinguished visiting scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he is working on the design of an interplanetary Internet.
