<<<Unconvince me, if you can, that the 87+ Billion of our money should instead have been spent on antiterrorist actions in THOSE countries, not in irrelevant, defanged, overflown Iraq. Bush should apologize for being sidetracked, and then turn the fight to the REAL enemy.
I'd vote for him if he did that. >>>
Probably cant convince you (g), you have pretty good handle on things
Still, it was necessary to mobilize the Nation, develop
a direction, attract peoples minds away from their stock market losses ,job worries and medical costs, and work together to a greater goal. Survival.
All these were accomplished, as indicated by the discussions on this thread. Did not get everyone on-board, but did get a consensus.
I try to look upon things that happen as having been for the best, might as well, because we cannot change the past.
So first off, I say, with no proof, that the Iraq War
prevented a major depression which may have spread world wide. That the dollars spent on the war buildup improved the
economy and has started to bring back jobs.
The Nikkei has come back from the 7k to 11k
The Dow and Nasdaq are greatly improved.
The people (in general) feel we are winning, that we have a chance to finish the job in Iraq, that the Government is performing its duty to defend the country.
A vast improvement in Homeland Security, in Airline protection against terrorists.
The war on terror may last a long time. We now have improved assets to handle that -over 250,000 Military who have first hand on the ground experience with all that mey be involved - travel to and living in a foreign land, learning a different language most commonly used by terrorists, learning ways to seek out and destroy enemies hiding in cities or crowds. What kind of barrier design works best to stop truck bombers. Improved body armor, helicopter defenses.
I think the France, Germany and others have missed a great opportunity to learn some of those things which would assist them in defending their own country in the future, or in helping other countries they are committed to assist if they are attacked .
But I am forgetting that they are immune to attack and the world will be at peace as soon as we leave Iraq. (not quite serious here)
But your comment asked about the $87 bil., and its too early in the morning to think straight about money or economists.
