I can't imagine Cingular/AWE doing DO... there appears to be real enmity there towards anything Q... however, UMTS becomes more of a possibility, since AWE has the bandwidth that Cingular needs to contemplate such a move... all IMHO only, of course.

do you think that there is any chance that the new Cingular/AWE entity might go DO in response to Verizon's anticipated publicity that Cingular offers crummy second-rate slow technology?

I still dont see a migration to DO in the cards for any of the GSM carriers. The part that I am trying to figure out is the impact to any potential W-CDMA rollout. I assume that Docomo is going to try and get some assurances on what Cingular/AWE's plans would be for W-CDMA/imode (Docomo has some AWE board seats)....since that was the whole point of their $10 billion investment.

If Cingular is only willing to commit to EDGE, would Docomo also put in a bid?

OTOH, if Cingular is willing to give some sort of assurance to Docomo that they are going to move to W-CDMA, I see the entire thing as nothing but a positive for Qualcomm. In the short-term, the merger would likely create some problems for the carriers as it is inevitable that their will be some hiccups in a merger of this magnitude. Over the longer term, this allows Cingular's subs to have enough spectrum to move to W-CDMA.

Just my two cents...

Dallas Morning News this morning (1-22) reports---TI has developed a new chipset to power Edge wireless phones. "Edge networks allow users to surf the Web at about twice the rate of standard dial-up modems, wireless carriers say." The company plans to start producing the chip in the fourth quarter, and phones containing the chip could appear soon after, TI said"
