few facts to consider

1) french had a real problem with British influence in America. So it is not clear as of who helped whom.......

2) the debt was paid in full with interest and much much much more since then - WWI, WWII, Marshal Plan, etc

3) in most recent conflict with Iraq french got paid for the weapons that they sold to Saddam to kill American and British soldiers. And now french want and even demand American reconstruction money.
