I've consciously avoided the entire Democrat race so far, haven't seen one debate, haven't read anything more than a headline or the cut under a photo or a little bit of commentary here and there. I did finally listen to five minutes of Dean on C-Span radio Sunday, and was surprised at his voice. It's excellent, as good as a top quality TV commentator or professional talking head. Unusual for a President - the Bush's speech impediments are well-travelled ground but Clinton and Carter both have a somewhat nasal quality, Nixon's voice had a somewhat high, flat quality with a quaver, Kennedy, a great speaker, had that strong Boston accent, and Reagan and Roosevelt, also great speakers, also had a somewhat high register. Eisenhower and Truman I don't remember. Dean I thought sounded surprisingly pleasant to the ears. His so-called "meltdown" struck me as typical populist-style speechifying that you don't see much anymore but I remember quite well from my younger days. Please take note that Dean's photo has been on the front of every major publication, even in defeat. He's captured the imagination of the public. Even I was intrigued by what he had to say. I know, from experience, that what he promises can't be done, but when I was younger and more naive he would have been much more persuasive. It would be lovely if we could spend less on prisons and more on children. It would be lovely if we could sufficiently fund our military with bake sales. I'd love to eat ice cream every day without getting fatter and losing my teeth, while we're dreaming.
