I understand basic trade. Unfair trade is what many Americans don't understand.

If you understood it, Ann, you would understand that we would be way ahead if we dropped all trade barriers, without regard to what the other trading countries do. If I am willing to buy and sell with everyone, and you aren't, you lose.

That's the irony.

Those who don't understand trade unfortunately are mistaken about their best interests. This mistake is fostered by politicians who know better or at least should but who appeal to populism in their own short term best interests. It's hard to put those politicians on a higher moral plane than the business people they decry.
