Ah, but how many of those KMs are driven where? That chart and the text don't say that all those KMs were on freeways/autobahns. If more KMs are on city streets, the death rate there is probably higher than highways.

I was surprised that the Brits have the lowest death rate since they IMO drive like maniacs Four things to point out 1) British roads are crap, and I think that that seeing people drive 75 on a crappy roads gives the perception of maniacs. 2) Not sure what those figures refer to but Brits don't spend much time on freeways/expressways or motorways so that might have something to do with it. 3) Having grown up in the UK and driven on those motorways, I have to say they are more orderly than the US freeways/expressways. It might be faster, but you just don't see cars bobbing in and out of lanes cutting people off as often. The "I've got to change lanes every 100 feet attitude" is one of my peevs regarding US traffic. 4) Also the Brits don't allow amateurs on the road - there was an interesting article in the WSJ last year regarding American residents in the UK having problems in passing the UK driving licensing exam.

You could argue that the Germans are too procedural in the way they drive to get in many accidents. yes, they are disciplined and on the autobahn when someone approaches (on the fast lane) and flashes his lights... all he is saying is.... please move over, I am coming through faster than you.... the slower drivers, move over, as they do not see this as a threat to their testicles. In the US... such action is seen as a direct threat to the driver who is being passed manhood. However, I was surprised that the Brits have the lowest death rate since they IMO drive like maniacs. I have always known the Brits to be courteous drivers... the draw back are the "roundabouts" they freak out and freeze....
