German government says no acute risk from bird flu
Wednesday January 21, 11:12 am ET

HAMBURG, Jan 21 (Reuters) - The German government currently sees no acute risk to the country from the outbreak of the poultry disease bird flu in Asia but tourists should take extra care, the Agriculture and Consumer Protection Ministry said on Wednesday.

Millions of chickens have been slaughtered in Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan following the current outbreak of the disease and five people in Vietnam have died.

German junior Agriculture and Consumer Protection minister Alexander Mueller said in a statement: "Travellers in the affected countries are urged urgently to observe the relevant protective measures."

Tourists should not bring back food and should not visit poultry farms or poultry markets, he said.
