As I watched the president's delivery, remarkable for its restrained strength and easy authority, I could not help but compare it to the image, still replaying itself in my mind, of Governor Dean's acknowledgement, on the previous night, of his third-place finish in Iowa, which culminated in the curiously falsetto "Yaaaarrrrr" that has been so much remarked upon. And yet until very recently the governor was considered by many people to be, by virtue of his oratorical gifts and personal magnetism, the Democratic candidate most capable of winning hearts this year. Dean acted like he was high on something...did anyone check his nose?
