I would love to see them reinstate the draft, even if it's only 20% of the total military. It's a natural political check and balance. Both men and women, no deferments. If there is even a remote chance that your kid might be the one dismembered by a roadside bomb, it tends to personalize the issue.

My question remains unanswered. If this war is so popular, you'd think the army would be swamped with enlistees, wouldn't you? But the folks who support it don't internalize the weight of a nation that commits itself to war, because their kids don't have to serve. So they support it. It's not that they are bad people, it's just that they are not touched by it directly. So, as Rangel and JF said, the draft would shed a completely different light on the matter.
