Hi GV, Do you know if there is a recognized venue for obtaining news on international startups - just a list of all international startups recently funded in Japan, Korea, and China, one liners explaining the startup's name, amount funded and category. Am hearing more through the grapevine on international startups than what feels like is available here. Does VentureOne have international coverage? Searches so far done by people using VentureOne yields only USA lists ?

And this gets to the reason why this question is made through a post rather than private email, namely Intel Capital's initiative into the Home Consumer market begs the questions:

Who exactly are Intel's competitors in the consumer space?

What and whom is Intel up against?

Intel needs to clarify this for the Valley, maybe through some visibility in a Red Herring article, because some of us folks in the Valley are a bit puzzled. One investor summed up my initial take and possibly the Valley's current opinion on Intel's consumer capital fund, "the consumer market is for the behemoths - who would want to play in that?"

Another way to reflect back the opinion the Valley has about the consumer space, is to look at how there is only one popular VC recognized in the Valley as pro on the consumer area - he has his other foot partially in Korea so no surprise there.

The shift towards wifi does make it at least sufficiently appealing enough to take a quick look at some requests around here, but more clarity is needed for everyone to better understand what the Valley would be up against in supporting this. If we understood what Intel is up against and what Intel's goals are with this fund and what Intel's competitors are funding, that would quickly provide the clarity needed in the Valley.

I'm not clear on what Intel's goals are, what Intel is up against and thus what startups we fund would be up against.

A quick gathering of market intelligence in this area, has yielded the following:

- Sony has so much at stake will they play dirty against startups?

I've already learned Sony's MO is to fund startups here, but create terms that disallow Sand Hill money. I believe sand hill provides startups with some level of protection thru fair capitalism and so by removing this protection of fair practice and forcing the startups to expel sand hill and only take money from Sony, I believe they intend to make the startups dependent and vulnerable on them. Next, they force the startups to undo their USA incorporation by re-incorporating in Japan so they are bounded by Japan. When taken together, I believe this easily sets the tone for an IP transfer from USA startups to Sony. At a mimimum, it gives an appearance of such. Everything stated here is my interpretation of publicly known industry information.

My initial take is, I don't think the Valley should be funding consumer product companies, given the dynamics of the consumer market - it's for behemoths not startups. That's my initial take. Though, I tend to believe it's okay to support those technologies which are supportive to consumer companies, but not directly competitive. I think Intel just needs to clarify its goals to everyone.

Your thoughts?

Regards,
Amy J
