NEW REPUBLIC - SOMEWHERE, JOHN EDWARDS IS SMILING: The Kerry camp must be feeling pretty good about this new Boston Herald poll showing them leading Dean and Clark in New Hampshire by 10 and 15 points, respectively. But one thought comes to mind: Do the Kerry people really want to slaughter Dean in New Hampshire--and, by doing so, effectively foreclose on Dean's chances of winning the nomination so early in the game?

If I'm John Kerry, a Howard Dean who still clings to some tenuous hope of regaining his footing seems like a much more savory prospect than a Howard Dean so far out of the running he's got nothing to lose. The first Howard Dean, as we've seen on the campaign trail during the last 36 hours, is cautious to the point of meekness, convinced that one more outburst of negativity and the whole game's over. The second Howard Dean is bitter and angry and sitting on a good chunk of the $40 million he raised last year. More important, this is also the Howard Dean whose aides grew to personally despise Kerry and Kerry's handlers while the latter were trying to kneecap Dean during his ascent last summer.

It doesn't seem like a stretch to me that, if things got bad enough, Dean and Trippi et al would use all that money to commit one of those suicide-homicides they're convinced Gephardt pulled on them in Iowa--especially since it'd pretty much just be a homicide at that point. In fact, a senior Dean aide once told me they actually threatened to do this to Kerry last summer if Kerry hit Dean too far below the belt. This same aide attributes the fact that Kerry never did hit that far below the belt to precisely that threat.

What could Kerry possibly do to avert this fate? I have no idea. But somewhere, John Edwards is smiling.

LB,

It's desperation to compare increase in temporary jobs as end to jobless recovery. The jobs lost were family sustaining quality jobs. Temp jobs are usually low-pay & always without any benefits. It's like comparing fresh apples with plastic apples.
