Aide says ayatollah wants Iraqi experts to help UN decide on elections

The leader of Iraq's Shiites may be changing his position on the upcoming elections.

A spokesman for Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani says he would be willing to drop his demand for early elections if Iraqi experts, along with those from the United Nations agree such a ballot would not be feasible.

The ayatollah reportedly wants to hear "alternatives" for choosing a new assembly if the experts agree with officials of the US-led coalition that an early ballot cannot be held.

The US is calling for a series of regional caucuses to select a new provisional legislature. That legislature would then choose the new government that would take power by July first.

The ayatollah doesn't like that idea, because the government would not be chosen directly by the Iraqi people.

I expect these are the same Iraqi experts that have already said there should be no problem in holding elections. Getting interesting.
