Primitive people trying to understand the physical world made a lot of mistakes that we know of. Presumably our current understanding is flawed but less flawed. If more primitive people didn't try to understand the world we never would have reached the level of understanding that we have. Understanding God might be more difficult then understanding the physical world. Perhaps we might always be in the equivalent situation to pre-scientific method humans trying to understand the world, but I don't think we should give up the effort entirely or that it is silly to think and talk about God.

(BTW - I "understanding God" in the most general sense. God is defined as the creator of the universe, nothing more specific, and I would even include an atheistic understanding because it would be an understanding about the nature of God (namely that he doesn't exist).)

Is gravity good or evil? Is that a sensible question?
