Judi, I'am not sure if what I said is true today since I keep
on forgetting that only I still have as reference Windows 3.1
on my pc, and its o.k. to have more than one Windows 3.1
installed on the same harddrive. Whichever WIN.COM that
I execute from my DOS 5.0, that directory is used as the
files Windows needs. The only hic-up I found in making
a backup of Windows 3.1 by copying it elsewhere is that
there are hidden & system files that a DOS COPY will not
include in the copying, so I do the copy using Windows 3.1
copy command in the Edit menu I think it is. I also don't
think the DOS command XCOPY will work eventhought
it has those switches to include sub directories.
Gosh I'am babbling, as hopefully thecow will chime in
to the ability to dump/copy Windows XP onto a CD and
get everything needed so one could reload it into an empty
directory and have it work identical to before.
I guess its possible that after Windows 3.1 an official disk
that one must purchase from Microsoft, or get from the
pc manufacture with it preloaded, has special conditioning
software that must be loaded and run prior to loading
the actual Windows. But if so I'am hoping that anything
like that can also be copied, and if it is deleted by the
Windows setup commands, that the underground can suppy it.
For sure that issue I asked about, only being able to load
Windows XP onto a single harddrive most likely is a seperate
issue in matching up a license identification tag (i hope).
For double sure thecow can say everything I just did in 12 words
or less :o)

Doug

a way to make a backup of XP if you don't receive one with the computer?

Short answer...no

Long answer....yes, but you would have to have software such as drive image by powerquest. I have never used something like that so if I am wrong on this, somebody correct me. Did your machine not come with a system restore cd? If it did, you can restore to the factory setup with it and then make an image of it and save it to another hard drive or partition. Then if something goes haywire you can restore the image and be back up and running in 8-15 minutes. Some people make multiple images when they think their system is working as good as it can and that way they don't have to go all the way back to the start when something goes wrong.

Here's a Langa article that will tell you all about system backups.
