I have both windows XP Home and Windows 2000 Professional.

I think you will find Win 2K OK for gaming. I had some problems with it, bought Win XP and the problems remained for games where the processor is flat out. I later found I had a problem with the sound card and now games work just fine with both OS's.

I use XP Home typically, as it loads faster and my kids like it. I still use Win 2k professional for all programs that XP does not like, or they do not like XP. Fark spending money on software upgrades. Fark spending money on software as I see it.

There are a few software causes I would like to donate money too (like Lavasoft freebes etc) I just hate it when some AH tries and twists my cyber arm to get money outta me at every turn. Fark them.

That includes softie (MSFT).

Long time after you asked the question, but here is my take. Maybe it will be useful for others.

I am quite an avid game player, playing mostly adventure games from DOS-based (1980's-90's) to the newest stuff.

I have WinME at home and Win2K on the laptop from work.

Some of the games do not run on Win2K though it seems that newer games are getting more compatible with Win2K.

I assume (but have not tried) that most of old DOS games and some of Win98 games will not run on WinXP. That's why I am not upgrading to it. If anyone has experiences with DOS games on XP vs. ME/98, I would love to hear them.

In essence, every game is different, so there is no single answer about games and XP/Win2K/WinME/98. I would assume that most people will be fine with XP and possibly Win2K. Your personal mileage may vary.
