I don't know all the facts of the case but am surprised that nobody told the jury about the mandatory sentence. I've seen elsewhere that if the boy had been charged with statutory rape, the sentence would have been one year.

Nevertheless, given that there were three blacks on the jury, the charge of lynching seems out of place to me.
