FL.T Bargaining Update

January 23, 2004

This morning the company invited the Bargaining Team to listen to a presentation regarding their costs regarding Pensions, Benefits, and C1 costs. This was the same presentation that we were given last May, in October and a condensed version at the start of negotiations on December 01. The feeling on the part of the company seems to be that we don’t understand. They are wrong! We understand very well. There is not a worker at Falconbridge who does not understand the company position on the C1 cost. What they don’t understand is that over the past three years, they have used up all of their credibility. They have to go a lot farther than saying their proposals should be accepted because they are looking for flexibility or the C1 costs need to be controlled.

As some of you no doubt are aware the first picket trailer was set up at the Onaping Gate today. The rest should be in place by Monday. The Strike Coordinators and Bargaining Committee met today at the hall with Gary Lilly from the CAW National office to finalize strike preparations. The company is rapidly running out of time to make an offer that the membership of this local deems fair and just. Convincing the Bargaining Committee won’t be enough, they need to convince the membership, and that will be a hard sell…
