Take canadian drugs, for example

Cnadian government negotiate deals with private companies

Drug companies, given no other choice, would sell at above variable cost. Now, the overall requirement is to cover all costs plus profit. Taking US drugs off canadian market would marginally increase the cost of drugs in US. Not taking it would lead to other countries using Candian model to cut the cost of drugs.

Something similar already happened within US when CA started to regulate insurance premiums. Insurance companies were able to easily spread the cost over the remaining 49 states until more states started to pass laws to regulate their premiums.

While the deal is great for CA (or Canada) the rest of us end up paying for it.

Now, Milton might say that from economical perspective the CA laws are not bad at all since the moneys are just redistributed within US. From personal perspective I would rather not redistribute money out of my pocket.....
