Art:

No one knows why it failed to pursue the strategy; perhaps it was a "low-return" type strategy since almost anyone could offer that type of service? Thankfully, SanDisk is in a business with barriers to entry. On the other hand, while this type of "investment opportunity" did not look "appealing" to SanDisk, it does to Kodak. I mean where else is Kodak going to go with Flash eating its lunch?

The "dog tag" medical record idea does look like a good idea. With prices coming down, who knows it could rise again and that idea appears to be superior to a central database holding users' medical records accessible over the internet.

They are basically making a consumer item, where demand could easily drop in periods of economic recession

Yep. That's why a "brand awareness" strategy is imperative and might allow SanDisk to charge a "premium" for its flash.

Let's face facts, an AMD uP operates just as well as an Intel uP, but Intel can charges upwards of a 25% premium. While consumers may not be able to name a hard drive manufacturer or a DRAM manufacturer, they do know the Intel brand name.
