My brother-in-law, who is a very intelligent man, has a BA in political science but somehow learned enough Cobol to get a job back in the old days, and has somehow managed to remain employed as a Cobol programmer until recently.

For years I suggested (hectored, actually) that he learn new programs, but he just complained that management would send other people out to learn programming new languages and they should send him. I tried to talk him into going at night but he wouldn't. Well, maybe he'll manage to get another job, he says that Cobol is still useful for keeping track of money.

I just know that all the programming types I know are constantly learning new things. One fellow has turned his john into a private library and uses his "down time" there to teach himself new languages.
