Told you so.... (*)

Prefect's former school is damaged in bombing

Monday, January 26, 2004

An explosion on Sunday morning slightly damaged a school that was until recently headed by a man who recently became France's first Muslim prefect.

The car of the prefect, Aïssa Dermouche, was bombed a week ago, and no one was injured in that attack. The police cordoned off the area around the Audencia business school, whose entrance was damaged, to determine whether material used in the blast was the same as that used to destroy the car.

Dermouche, 57, born in Algeria, was named to the post of prefect, the state's highest representative of a region, on Jan. 14.

(*) The program in Europe was aimed at the threat that Muslim immigrants might mount a viable lobby or gain a share of political power through the ballot box. A viable lobby was unlikely, however, since nearly all posts in the bureaucracy were filled after the cold war by solidly Islamophobic veterans, with US approval.

Somehow, France is to Islamophobia what Italy was to anti-Communism in the Cold War, namely, Europe's chief battleground.... The "Aldo Moro" of the US's anti-Muslim war in Europe will likely be French....
