I would say commercial fusion energy is at least 30 years out.

I would say that is right on schedule. It would be devastating to the economy built around oil to be implemented sooner. I agree with you that conservation is a better "source" but to make it most cost effective will take higher oil prices. Most alternative energy solutions require heavy government subsidizing but we have numerous energy conserving technologies that we only need price incentive to deploy.
