Technology produces thousands of failures for every success. Some people find this to be a disconcerting aspect when trying to find investments. I find it fascinating but I also have a very different investment style than most. I'm willing to have a large number of investments result in small losses in order to have a small number result in very large gains. Most people want their investments to incrementally add to their net worth continually. Problem is that those are the exact people who get taken out by the "black swan" event as we saw in the 2000 melt down. For me, I'd rather make money from the rare event and it is a rare event that one of these various technology companies goes on to create an enormous value. The one good thing is that the ones that succeed are hidden in plain view.
