I believe that if you look back at American history to see examples when either party had control of both the Presidency and at least control of one house of Congress and control or missing it by a narrow majority in the other house that runaway pork barrel politics ensued. One of the beauties of the 'American System' is the checks and balances put in to control human greed and avarice. Those are human, not primarily political traits. Each party claims and may even believe they are looking out for the best interests of the country, but each is swayed by their own constituency, views and prejudice. When did we move toward balanced budgets? -When the DEMs were in office and the PUBs had control of the House of Representatives and near stalemate in the Senate. Neither side has the goal to have good government - if they did they would both vote the other guy into office until there was a fiercely contested balance! ; ^) I saw part of a movie on the boob tube last night - about a giant meteor hitting the earth. Maybe that would be best - wipe out everything and just start fresh. Then we could start new parties, new religions and new populations from scratch . . bring back the pioneering spirit. Hmmm maybe instead of a mission to Mars Bush can fund a mission to redirect a meteor to create the next Armageddon. That would be a new vision for the country alright. Might even get Bush to play the role of Son of God and emerge from the cave to lead the rebuilding. . . . I know this is going to cause a flurry of bashing but why not have some fun with it?
