Danger in new China syndrome
Red-hot economy triggering a global chain reaction

William Hanley
Financial Post

January 23, 2004

In the movie The China Syndrome, about a nuclear power plant on the verge of a catastrophe, the title refers to the notion that in such an accident, the meltdown of the reactor core would burn all the way through the Earth to China.

More than 20 years later, the new China syndrome is all about a melt-up in the Chinese economy that is producing a worldwide chain reaction touching commerce everywhere, especially in North America. As the Chinese New Year ushers in the year of the monkey, the early part of the 21st century is shaping up as the decade of the dragon. Indeed, with India also beginning to flex its economic muscle and the Asian tigers roaring again, this could also be shaping up as the Asian century.
