However, he fled to escape punishment, and it would be true to say that the British turned a blind eye to his anti-Jewish leanings as long as he was not challenging their rule in Palestine. The Appointment took place in March 1921 and the rigid rule adopted by Haj Amin in his new capacity as the religious head of the Palestine Moslems was never to mix with Jews. The second Jewish Pogrom occured soon after, in May of the same year. The Arab press was full of anti-Jewish propaganda and the publication “Protocols of Zion” appeared frequently rousing the masses to a new pitch of violence. Hitler and the Mufti were planning to first exterminate the Jews of Europe and then the Jews of the Middle East. The Mufti, who visited Nazi death camps several times, organized support for the Nazis from amongst Muslims in Russia, the Balkans, and the Middle East. He headed the "Arab Bureau" in Berlin, where he directed a massive network of Arab-Nazi collaborators. He organized tens of thousands of Bosnian and Albanian Muslims into military units known as Handschar divisions, which carried out atrocities against Yugoslav Jews, Serbs and Gypsies, and he attempted to organize an Arab-Nazi Legion. Handschar fighters would be discovered battling against Israeli independence in 1948. The only condition the Mufti set for his help was that when Hitler won the war, the entire Jewish population of Palestine would be exterminated. In 1945, Yugoslavia sought to indict the Mufti as a war criminal for his role in recruiting 20,000 Muslim volunteers for the SS, who participated in the killing of Jews in Croatia and Hungary. He escaped from French detention in 1946, however, and continued his fight against the Jews from Cairo and later Beirut. He died in 1974. After the war, a member of Young Egypt named Gamal Abdul Nasser was among the officers who led the July 1952 revolution in Egypt. Their first act – following in Hitler's footsteps – was to outlaw all other parties. Nasser's Egypt became a safe haven for Nazi war criminals, among them the SS General in charge of the murder of Ukrainian Jewry; he became Nasser's bodyguard and close comrade. Alois Brunner, another senior Nazi war criminal, found shelter in Damascus, where he served for many years as senior adviser to the Syrian general staff and still resides today.Sami al-Joundi, one of the founders of the ruling Syrian Ba'ath Party, recalls: "We were racists.
