Novellus Names Dr. Sasson Somekh As President

SAN JOSE, Calif. -(Dow Jones)- Novellus Systems Inc. (NasdaqNM:NVLS - News) named former Applied Materials Inc. (NasdaqNM:AMAT - News) executive Sasson Somekh as president.
Somekh, 57 years old, will join Richard S. Hill and Tom St. Dennis in semiconductor-equipment company's office of the chief executive. Somekh will focus on product development and the company's product line business units.

Novellus' current president is listed as Peter R. Hanley on the company's Web site. Novellus officials couldn't be immediately reached for comment on whether Hanley has left the company.

A heavily awarded scientist, Somekh spent 23 years at Applied Materials, most recently as executive vice president. Prior to joining Applied, he worked at Bell Laboratories, a unit of Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - News) , and Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - News) .

Somekh received his doctorate in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology. He holds more than 50 U.S. patents, and a chip manufacturing system he co-invented is exhibited in the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
