Spirit's 256K flash appears to have been the problem on Mars, according to the engineers. Maybe the next mission will have our radiation hardened OUM non-volatile memory.

We need to get the message out that these batteries in the Kyocera telephones were the dangerous Li-Ion chemistry. I think that the Consumer Product Safety Agency is remiss in not identifying what kind of battery was involved in this recall. Lithium Ion has had repeated troubles for as long as I can remember. I remember the MoLi cell which practically burnt a Japanese man's ear off when he attempted to use his cell phone. Then there have been the Apple notepad fires in which case they recalled the entire shipment and then got out of supplying the Li-Ion battery pack with there machine. Then there was the fire at one of the manufacturing plants. The Li_Ion technology is the problem here. By the way the batteries on the Spirit rover are Li-Ion as well. They were not designed for a long life cycle, just enough to transmit pictures for about 3 months.
