In the case of William Scott Ritter, his real name, nobody knew he was the same guy until he started his little media frenzy. He apparrently sought relief under a first offender provision. A form of suspended proceeding or pre-trial intervention. I am not familiar with the New York law, however, all states have similar laws. That is why the record was sealed. That is the case in such a program.

He was charged with a class B misdemeanor, and the case was later adjourned in local court in contemplation of dismissal - meaning that if he stayed out of trouble for six months, the case would be sealed. The first anyone learned about the case was last Saturday, when it was first disclosed by the Schenectady Gazette. http://www.spartacus.ws/000313.html
