They could be deployed around Taiwan to ensure that exports from China proceed uninterrupted to the USA and rest of the world. The global economy depends on continuing trade with China.

Taiwan might decide to invade China to re-establish legitimate government based on democratic freedoms. The USA could stop them doing that.

Also, China might decide to adopt USA policy of pre-emptive war to prevent war in which case the ships could stop China attacking Taiwan.

The USA depends on exports from Taiwan and China so it's important to keep the trade flowing.
