< Name one benefit of having more people>
Is n't this the same anthropocentrism that has gotten us into the current mess? The planet does not exist for your benefit or man's benefit.
You certainly show all the zeal of a recent convert who has found the one true answer. The truth of the matter is that population growth has been long recognized as a problem, and many countries have programs, - some that work some that don't. Demographics do not change overnight, however high pitched your rant, or however much money you throw at the problem.
If you want to have ZPG for the US, because an immigrant becomes a high consumer the moment he crosses over, you have a point, but a minor one that will get out voted every time against many entrenched lobbies that benefit from immigration, so if you wish to see some relation between action and result, you might want to shift focus a bit.
A huge number of migrants from poor to rich countries send money back home - to the extent that this amount dwarfs Foreign Aid. - This might suggest that the migrants do not change their habits overnight. Cause and effect is seldom straightfoward.
Other countries, while mesmerized by consumerism, do not follow in lock step with the US, They also can come up with their own solutions that are less energy intensive or waste prone. You just have to look to Europe for some of that.

As for railing against others invoking God, it could be that they are using it as a shortcut to express their frustration, besides I see no big difference between a science/knowledge/theory based resignation and a faith based resignation.
I mean what is the big difference between, - ' the markets will take care of the problem' and ' God will take care of the problem' - both inherently pin faith on humans being adaptive enough to adjust to whatever.
The handwringing is all about whether the changes induced by man are so large that he will not be able to adapt.
