I agree with your post. There was an interesting post I believe by Dale with respect to the dangers of splitting up Iraq. My inclination would be to split it up into 3 nations to avoid a massive civil war. However, I realize this simplistic approach would be stepping on the toes of Turkey, Pakistan and Iran. Part of me wants to believe that it would be possible to bring representatives of each nation and each of the Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites and come up with something. Then I think of the comparable partition in 1948 and the resulting wars and I'm glad I don't have to solve that problem today.

There were no oil wells to divide in 1948, so it boiled down to hatred and power. However, this time I believe it's about oil money and whether or not the Kurds would control a disproportionate amount of oil. If each of the Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds got their own nation, Kurds leaving Turkey and Pakistan for a New Kurdistan, and somehow the oil wealth were shared, not just grabbed via geography, could that bring a solution?

who knows? Probably not......
