Would it make you more comfortable if I amended my statement from "Europe" to "Western Europe"?

No. Of course not.

Understanding the Geography of Europe and the world, and the Foreign Policy of the USSR are an essential part of comprehending why your assertion is incorrect. Geography and Foreign Policy continue to be inseparable world-wide.

I could argue against your Europe was a buffer to protect the USA theory for a long time with constant new points.

Here is one for today. What danger did the Soviets pose to the US that the European mainland protected us from from?

In reality there was a geographical buffer. Water AKA the Atlantic Ocean. It was there, but unnecessary as a buffer, since the Soviets never possessed the invasion fleet needed to invade America. The distance from the South of England to the South of France is a puddle jump compared to the distance from the South of England to South Carolina.

Your assertion is akin to saying Michigan is a buffer protecting Ohio from Canada. Michigan is between the two...So are the real geographical buffers of Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Yet there is no threat and no buffer is or was needed. Like the Soviet union, Canada is no invasion threat. Never was.
