Depends which problem you mean - Muslim alienation or the US sucking up to regimes that violate human rights?

;<)

Over the decades, the Chinese Communists have broken every rule we apply for "civilized nations" - no human rights, meddling in their neighbors' military affairs, developing all kinds of WMDs, etc. But every administration since Nixon has puckered up and smiled a coy smile for Beijing for the simple reason.....that they would become a major economic player, just like the Saudis.

Critics would say we coddle dictators that should have been replaced. Supporters will say that constructive engagement with bad regimes can transform their behavior over time.

One thing I am sure of - the US has no coherent rule or practice for which regimes we bash, which we suck up to, who we tolerate and who we invade.

Like our coalitions now, it's all very ad hoc. Which never produces coherent policies or coherent results.
