Amy Re...My 8th grade math was redundant. I should have been bussed to high school. Here's another example, everyone knows San Jose schools are generally poor, while PA, Cupertino and Saratoga have better schools. Don't see why motivated students can't be bussed to the better schools.

First off, bussing is generally considered forced bussing, under court orders. The courts force school districts to bus students from poor neighborhoods into surrounding richer neighborhoods, generally for racial integration. As it is normally forced upon them, the students generally hate it; even the students bussed into the better schools, because they are isolated from their normal neighborhood friends. And to develop new friends, with similar tastes, and for protection, they often form gangs, which not only increases violence, but also defeats the original purpose they were bussed for; racial harmony.

In your case, I doubt if you would have wanted to be bussed into a high school, just for one better class, unless the high school was nearby, in which case, I think it is the students responsibility to provide for their own transportation; just as they are in college.

No amount of additional money would have gotten my 8th grade math class into a more competitive situation, other than a complete revamp of the system. Throwing more money at a bad system, isn't teh answer.

I agree that it is the system, rather than the money. However, you say student should be bussed to richer school districts, because they can afford better teachers etc. And I said, if you think it is the money, then just transfer the money, not the students. Now you say, it isn't the money. I agree. You don't have to bus the students, or transfer the money, or blame the teachers; you really need to change the system, into a college type system.

Or, even a better option would have been, to let you take a correspondence course, or night course, from a local college, as long as you qualified for it.

You switched the topic of bussing, to gangs. I was talking about the bussing of students extremely interested in getting the best education

Bussing, as a term, is generally considered forced bussing, where the courts force a district to bus students, to respond to suits bought on by ACLU etc, to force the districts to provide a better education, and more integration, for students in the poor, and generally minority districts.
For one class, maybe, but would you have wanted to be bussed into a different school, and forced to take all of your classes there. Secondly, just like college, the students should provide their own transportation, once the student gets either to a central hub, or their district school.

Gangs often times are the result of forced bussing. We are talking about two different things. Bussing is generally forced budding. You are talking about transferring, which is a voluntary switching to a better school; that I am for.

School is the pipeline for businesses, governments and non-profits.

No, the schools primary purpose is to educate, not to act as a pipline for business, or as a babysitter, or as a means to achieve racial harmony. Let the schools focus on doing their job. Let the students worry about pipelining, or whatever, and to which class, or school they want to attend to achieve their goals.

Probably because the troubled ones don't go on to college. So statistically, there's less problems in college compared to lower schools.

Did you ever think that it is the way mid and high schools are set up, which is causing a lot of troubled students. Colleges are forced to give the students the types of courses they want to attract students, which is the base for their funding. High schools do; and in some cases are forced to do; the exact opposite. Change the system to a college type, student centric system, and you won't have nearly the trouble.

They've lost a lot of time and money.

So. It is the students own decision. Its their life, and they should have the right to go in the direction with their life, they chose. If they change their minds, so be it. If they made a mistake, they will do what it takes to correct that mistake. If the mistake is forced upon them, they will hate you not only for the mistake, but also for the poor grades they will get because of poor motivation, and for you trying to run their lives.

RE: " Of course, when they graduated, they were expected to go back to Taiwan, and work there."

Really? Why? None of my Taiwanese college roommates went back home. In some cases, their parents moved here.

Things change over the years. When I went, pre Vietnam era, the Taiwanese students in my dorm, came over together on a gov. financed scholarship, and a univ. scholarship.

I'm trying to get an engineering student into the USA so she can attend grad school here - good luck they say because she's a female!

Thats because, it is the females who make the babies, which cause overpopulation. Us men just spread seed around, but don't really make anything. Just kidding. I saw one of your posts, and you were saying men should be the sex using contraceptives, because of the # of seeds flying all over the place. <ggg>

Every time you mix a bucket of clean water with a bucket of dirty water you get two buckets of dirty water.
