Depends on what your use of the computer. Memory upgrades are relatively cheap and give you the best bang for the buck if you are going to do multi-media, stock trading or lots of games. I'd buy it.

As for the warranty, definitely for laptop. With a desktop, if you are comfortable opening up the box and swapping components, you might not need it. If not, I'd buy one for the length of time you plan on owning the machine.

This may not be advice you want to use but I'll give you my opinion. You may be more comfortable just getting the extended warranty. The standard protection lasts for a year on most computers. With Dell, I think you even get someone to come to your house to replace a defective part within that year. If a computer part doesn't fail in the first year of use it's unlikely to fail the next year or two so by the time you need to replace a part you have paid them more money than it would cost you to have it done locally or do it yourself. As far as memory is concerned, buy the minimum from Dell and order more online. It's much cheaper. I buy my memory from Crucial. You can go to their site and choose the system that you have and they'll tell you what kind of memory your computer uses, let you order it, and tell you how to install it. It will probably save you 30-40%. Memory is the easiest thing you can install on a computer. If you can open the case, you can add memory.

What are you going to buy?
