But now, according to the aforementioned Tim Noah of Slate, Dean has undergone a lobotomy:

"Dean kept what Chatterbox considered an inappropriate calm as Diane Sawyer played the now-famous Iowa Screaming Tape not once, not twice, but three times (there may have been a fourth; Chatterbox lost count). The outburst was the other great subject of the interview. At first, Dean defended himself, pointing out, 'I was having a good time, look at me,' and it's true; he's smiling on the tape. . . . But Sawyer was unappeasable: '[I]t is the sort of thing that can hurt . . . really hurt you,' she pressed. Eventually she had Dean almost apologizing: 'I would not make the case for a moment that that was presidential.' It was horrible to watch. (And it wasn't today's only grovel. Before the interview, during the candidate's debate on Fox News, Dean allowed that the mockery of his 'hooting and hollering' had been justified. After the interview, in an appearance on Late Show With David Letterman Dean pledged to 'switch to decaf' and engage in 'fewer crazy red-faced rants.'

"Seeing Dean beg for mercy over what was merely an untelegenic display of enthusiasm called to mind the last scene in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. . . ."

Here's the New York Times on the Diane Sawyer sitdown:

"Howard Dean said he is just another hockey dad.

"His wife of 23 years, Judith Steinberg Dean, said she cannot remember the last time he lost his temper. She said he's 'a good dancer.' He said 'she's a lot smarter than I am.'

"Nestled on a formal sofa in a quaint New Hampshire inn, the couple appeared in their first nationally televised interview Thursday in an effort to save Dr. Dean's embattled presidential campaign by reassuring the public that his emotional outburst after a disappointing third-place finish in Iowa's caucuses was an anomaly. As Diane Sawyer of ABC News aired the screech heard 'round the political world for the umpteenth time, Mrs. Dean looked lovingly at her husband, and giggled.

" 'He just doesn't get that angry,' Mrs. Dean, 50, told Ms. Sawyer in the segment scheduled for broadcast on 'Prime Time Thursday.' 'I mean, he doesn't. You know, he just, he's very kind, very considerate, and, it just doesn't happen.'

"Dr. Dean, the former governor of Vermont, acknowledged on the program that his performance Monday night was not 'presidential,' but shrugged it off as a passionate response to his fervent supporters. 'Last night, I went to a hockey game, my son got an assist on the first goal, I went "Yahoo," and jumped up in the air,' Dr. Dean told Ms. Sawyer.

"'That's presidential? Probably not. So, I'm a dad, I'm a human being, I'm going to keep being a dad and a human being.' "

Well said.

this is not a man trying to determine how best to frame his speech so that people will like what they are hearing. instead, this guy speaks with his soul. you don't see him looking towards the ceiling searching for words after the next person asks his or her question. no, he's staring back at that person with intensity, already into his response b4 they can even finish asking it.

he's obviously spent a LOT of time thinking about solutions to the many issues that plague this nation. a few of his responses had me sitting up in my chair going "wow, that's innovative" or "gee, that actually sounds like it might work"

the other candidates seem like they're just regurgitating old ideas that don't work. plus, they need to have had the ability to see that the case bush was offering for WMDs in iraq was total BS, and voted to not authorize the invasion. I was able to see it for what it was, why couldn't they? perhaps they could but didn't have the backbone to be a dissenting voter.

you're not gonna get that w/ dean .. and as a result, i wouldn't be surprised if he won new hampshire by a landslide on tuesday
