If an epidemic breaks out in Iraq or on Mars, I am sure the US government will bring to bear all the necessary resources to defend against any threat to freedom and prosperity there.

I think it is fair to say that it is inevitable that a virus will sweep the globe, destroying civilization as we know it, and there is nothing we can do to prevent that from happening.

But the odds of any particular virus being "the" virus are pretty slim.
