AMAT bought an asset in a field they had no experience in and, in my opinion, proceeded to destroy it.

While AMAT has complex systems, they did not have anything nearing the complexity of mask creation lithography. They "don't know what they don't know" and make poor decisions because of that...

Etec, it appears, would not have survived because of cash flow issues, if not for the AMAT purchase. However, it could have done well within AMAT, if they learned before acting...

IMHO: ETEC and Consilium acquisitions, along with Process Sequence Integration killed Somekh's bid for AMAT's presidency
