Several good examples mentioned by a few people. McCarthy era, AIDS, even Martians...yes...

I would definitely add the hysteria over "The Yellow Peril" which resulted in the internment of the Japanese in the U.S. and Canada in WWII.

All of these share great similarities as far as the general population being swept away with hysterical paranoia by a fear of "the other" -- whether it be in the form of a group of people, or a disease that seems to be coming from somewhere else.
